About the Role
Continuum Powders is seeking a hands-on Additive Manufacturing Engineer to join our growing team. This role is at the center of our metal 3D printing operations, responsible for the end-to-end management of a small metal additive manufacturing facility—from CAD design and print preparation through post-processing, machining, and finishing. The ideal candidate is a self-motivated problem solver who thrives in a fast-paced environment and is eager to develop deep expertise in metal additive manufacturing.
Key Responsibilities
- Own the full operation of the metal 3D printing facility, including machine setup, print monitoring, and equipment maintenance.
- Prepare and optimize 3D print jobs using slicing and print preparation software; manage build plate layouts and support structures.
- Perform post-processing operations including sawing, CNC machining, and surface finishing of printed metal parts.
- Develop CAD models and 2D detail drawings for individual parts and assemblies using SolidWorks or equivalent platforms.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams and external partners throughout the design, fabrication, and production phases.
- Review and check design and drafting work to ensure all technical requirements are met.
- Support purchasing with technical specifications and sourcing of materials and components.
- Assist with mechanical design of subassemblies, including plumbing, piping, pneumatics, hydraulics, and actuator systems as workload permits.
- Provide project cost estimates and manage assigned project tasks to schedule and budget.
- Troubleshoot and resolve issues that arise during any phase of the design, printing, or post-processing workflow.
Qualifications, Experience & Skills
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or related discipline required.
- Hands-on experience with metal or polymer 3D printing technologies (FDM, SLS, DMLS/SLM, or similar) preferred.
- Experience with CNC milling, turning, and G-code programming is a plus.
- Familiarity with controlled-atmosphere or vacuum metal processing systems is advantageous.
Technical Skills
- Proficiency in SolidWorks or comparable 3D CAD platform for modeling and detailed drawing production.
- Strong working knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T).
- Ability to work with a range of materials including carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, copper, brass, and engineering plastics.
- Competency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Basic math proficiency, including algebra, geometry, unit conversions, and tolerance calculations.
Attributes
- Self-starter with a proactive mindset and the drive to take ownership of tasks from start to finish.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills; comfortable collaborating across teams and with external partners.
- Exceptional attention to detail and organizational ability in a dynamic, fast-moving environment.
- Practical problem-solving skills and sound judgment when working through ambiguous or novel challenges.
- Flexibility and adaptability, this role evolves with the needs of the business.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
- The work environment includes both an office setting and an active manufacturing floor (including noise, heavy equipment, and metal powders).
- This role requires regular standing, walking, and use of hands for machine operation and part handling.
- The employee may occasionally stoop, kneel, crouch, or climb as needed on the shop floor.
- Lifting and moving up to 50 lbs is required at times.
- Close vision, color vision, and depth perception are necessary for quality inspection.
- Strict adherence to safety protocols and PPE requirements.
- Extended hours and occasional weekend work may be required during peak periods.
Travel
- Infrequent Domestic travel may be required.
